National Steel Day

Top Reasons Why We’re Celebrating Steel This Month!

National Steel Day, an annual celebration of the structural steel industry, happened this month; and it got us thinking about the many benefits of building with this miracle material.

Steel is an ideal construction material due to its durability and unique combination of lightweight and strength. As a man-made material, steel is manufactured in precise conditions to achieve properties and a level of quality that will remain consistent throughout the structure’s life.

When you build with steel, whether for business, civic or personal use, the possibilities are endless. How do we know this? We’ve designed and engineered thousands of pre-engineered metal buildings (PEMBs) since 1962, and we have seen and experienced the results ourselves.

Guess you could say that we know a thing or two about the benefits of steel.

"Steel is essential to modern society. Steel protects and provides strong frameworks for our buildings. It can be found in rails, roads, vehicles and domestic appliances. Steel delivers our food and water and enables energy generation and transmission." in text over an interior photo of a train station

For the past decade, the American Institute of Steel Construction (AISC) has sponsored an annual celebration of the structural steel industry known as National Steel Day in September. With all the value that steel offers, it’s easy to understand why steel is a preferred building material for many industrial, commercial, agriculture, and storage projects.

Here are just a few reasons why steel structures and pre-engineered metal buildings (PEMB) are worth celebrating.

#1 Strength

When it comes to strength, steel is superior to all other building materials. In fact, steel is THE strongest building material available. Steel has the highest strength-to-weight ratio of any commonly-used material, which makes it exceptionally durable. Because of its enormous strength, steel can handle more weight on load-bearing walls, so it is more commonly used to construct tall buildings.

#2 Efficiency

Steel is considered one of the most efficient modern construction materials. It is both light and strong, allowing for long spans and open, column-free spaces.

#3 Longevity

Steel is the longest-lasting building material. Unlike other building materials, steel framing will not naturally warp and lose strength over time. In addition, steel is impervious to changing moisture levels – which is critical in damp regions like the Pacific Northwest.

It will not swell, crack and distort over time as moisture levels change. Pre-engineered steel buildings are designed to stand up to floods, earthquakes, blizzards, hurricanes, extreme heat, bitter cold, and other weather conditions.

#4 Durability

Steel provides long-term durability. In fact, we refer to our prefabricated metal building kits as “legacy buildings” because they literally last for generations. Steel is known for its durability and resistance to natural elements like wind, rain, heavy snow, and even fire.

At PBS, our steel buildings are designed and manufactured using the highest quality steel in the industry. We always use heavy steel I Beams because they are easier to erect and provide a strong, safe, stable building.

"Steel products are durable and simply last a long time. The average life for steel products is approximately 40 years. In applications with a long service life, such as buildings or infrastructure, we will need to wait up to 100 years or more to recycle. In the case of steel packaging the time between production and recycling can be just a few weeks; in the case of vehicles this may be up to 15-20 years." in text over a photo of a steel road bridge

#5 Sustainability

Did you know that most steel products are made of recycled steel? Unlike other building materials, steel rarely ends up in landfills. Steel can be recycled multiple times without losing strength, a huge advantage for builders adapting to green building policies and codes.

"Steel is the most recycled material in the world. Being magnetic, steel is easy and affordable to recover from almost any waste stream." in text over a metal recycling plant

#6 Low Maintenance

Steel buildings are less susceptible to damage and costly repairs resulting from maintenance nightmares that commonly plague property owners, like bore-bees, termite infestation, wood rot, mold, mildew, or other fungi growth. Other building materials naturally deteriorate over time, while steel will last for generations with minimal maintenance.

#7 Smarter Investment

Steel offers long-term durability with lower life cycle costs and financial benefits that other materials don’t. In fact, steel buildings are some of the most cost-effective structures you can build. Because they are so durable, property owners often save on insurance premiums, as most insurance companies offer discounts for steel buildings!

Since 1962, Pacific Building Systems has earned its place in the metal and steel structure industry by delivering the highest quality pre-engineered metal buildings (PEMB) in the Pacific Northwest.

When you invest in a prefabricated steel building kit, like the ones manufactured at Pacific Building Systems, you will enjoy a high-quality building customized to your preferences with minimal upkeep for generations to come.
