Custom Components: From Start to Finish

If you are looking for custom components for your metal building, you have come to the right place!

Custom metal building components are essential for any pre-engineered metal building, but customization can sometimes be a challenge – not for us. We understand that each project has unique needs, and that’s why we are committed to helping you find the best components to fit those needs. If they don’t quite exist, we’ll help manufacture them!

In this blog post, we will be discussing the process of creating custom metal building components for our clients and the steps our components go through before they make their way to you.

A Request Arrives

The first thing that happens in the customization process is that a request for a custom part will arrive.

When customizing components for a pre-engineered metal building, customers may interact with one or more of our Components team members; Yolanda, Casey, and Rodrigo. Yolanda is part of our Inside Sales and Service team and is the Component Sales Representative for Oregon, Casey is our Senior Post Delivery and Service Representative, and Rodrigo is our Inside Sales and Service Representative for the Washington area and other states we serve.

At the start of a custom request, they will ask the customer to provide a vision for the part they are looking for. We will often ask for a profile or hand drawn sketch that can be converted into a trim drawing to manufacture the part off of, specifying the desired color and dimensions. This ensures that the final product meets the customer’s exact specifications.

From there, our team can further discuss the customer’s unique needs in order to craft custom metal building components and parts that will satisfy their requirements.

The Team Responds to the Request

Now it’s time for them to respond with the best plan of action for the part.

When a customer requests custom metal building components, it is up to the team in the Components department to respond and ensure that the order is handled quickly and accurately. Depending on the customization of the component, it will go to either the trim shop for roll forming sheets or the fabrication shop for small parts such as welding clips or anchor bolts.

Regardless of what department handles the custom fabrication, the components team is there to ensure that the parts and piece count, colors, and dimensions have all been double checked. Once the quality check is complete, the components are then blocked, banded, and wrapped in Tyvec to prevent water intrusion and to protect them from the elements.

This step of the process ensures that the metal building components are delivered on time, with no loss in quality or accuracy.

Where It Goes Next and What We Can Customize

Depending on the custom component that’s being made, it may move through a few areas of our warehouse and manufacturing space.

At Trim Shop, when customers have very special projects for their metal building components, Brenden will have a one-on-one meeting with Sebastian, who tends to the trim shop, to discuss the best course of action. Sometimes these jobs have specifications that are not usual, so the team will brainstorm and come to an agreement on the best way to fulfill the custom order.

Yolanda, Casey, or Rodrigo might have special orders that need to be put into a release summary. The summary is then sent out on Monday and Wednesday nights at 5pm. to be ready on a two day turnaround on Wednesday & Friday. This means if the release summary was turned in on Monday at 5pm, it will be ready on Wednesday. If it was turned in on Wednesday, it will be ready on Friday. Both the Trim and Fabrication Shops work on these timelines as far as the 2-day turnaround time goes.

With this process, we are able to create custom parts and components for metal buildings that meet the customer’s needs.

How You Can Receive Your Component

Once the part is made and ready to be implemented into your building, you’ll probably want to get your hands on it! Here’s how you can do that:

At Components Direct, we are now open for will-call Monday through Friday from 7:30am to 3:30pm. This way our customers can have greater access to their custom components when they need them. Contractors can arrive early at our facility and get loaded up before they have to be on the job site in the morning. All they need to do is check in at the front office and make sure the paperwork is all in order, then they can head around back and get loaded up with their custom parts.

And there you have it! That’s the process of getting a custom component from your brain to your building with Pacific Building Systems.
